Railway tracks and platforms in golden morning haze, seen from a footbridge

Eastline’s central station has one quiet hour a day, between the first tea and the first commuters. We filmed the whole documentary piece inside it.

The light comes through the roof at a low angle then, and the platforms are long enough to watch it move. By half past seven it’s gone, and so is the quiet.

A crew of three

A station at dawn is a working place, so we kept the crew small enough to stay out of the way.

  • Me, directing and later editing.

  • Arne Hollis on camera, handheld all morning.

  • A sound recordist with one boom and a pocket recorder.

Nobody wore anything bright. We wanted the station staff to forget us by the second train.

Following the light

We didn’t plan shots so much as places to stand as the sun moved along the platforms.

The footbridge

From up there the haze turns gold before anything else does. It’s the only wide in the film.

The tea stall

Steam, a hand on a cup and a radio murmuring timetable changes. Most of the sound in the film comes from those twenty minutes.

Try this at home

Stand in one place for ten minutes before you film it. The best frame usually walks past.

“We lost the light at 07:25 and didn’t mind. The crowd was the ending anyway.”

Arne Hollis, cinematographer

What a quiet hour teaches you

Arrive before the place wakes up and let it show you what it does every day. You can’t stage the first kettle.

Notes from the next shoot

About once a month: what I filmed, what I cut and what I learned doing it.
