A man riding an escalator down into a metro station at night

Sottel Nera

The city after midnight, from the escalator to the last carriage.

A short about the last metro of the night, filmed in empty stations under cyan strip lights.

The last metro of the night carries its own crowd: shift workers, students and people who stayed out longer than they meant to.

Empty stations, real hours

We filmed across three nights, around the last two trains, when the platforms were nearly empty and the strip lights were the only thing awake. Matteo shot handheld so the escalator and the carriage feel like one long walk home.

“Those lights are already the colour of the film. We just had to keep them that way.”

Matteo Ruiz, cinematographer

Keeping the cyan

The grade was the hard part, since the colour that sets the mood also makes faces look ill. How we kept both is in the journal: Grading the last train.
