Velluta Nox
One editor, one desk, the hours between midnight and first light.
A short brand film for an edit house about the part of the job nobody films: the mouse, the keys, the tea going cold and the window turning blue.
An edit house asked for a film about editing, which is a hard thing to film when most of the job is a man sitting very still.
What actually moves
So we filmed the few things that do, close and slow, over one real night at an editor’s desk.
The mouse, nudged a frame at a time.
The keys, worn shiny on J, K and L.
The tea, going from steam to skin.
The window, black at midnight and blue by five.
Cutting my own night
I edited it as well, which felt a bit like reviewing my own diary. One rule held from the first cut: no shot of a screen, because the work stays off camera for the people who do it, too.
